Jack Daniel's new social media campaign -- with zero budget

Boy, how times have changed.

A few years ago, social media for Jack Daniel's Sour Mash Whiskey consisted of a grassroots public relations campaign where their barn wood memorabilia and glass decanters were placed in non-alcohol venues like florist shops, jewelry and department stores -- to subliminally promote the brand -- in places where you would never expect to find them. A kind of brand serendipity, if you will.

Today, they are using the Web -- with no budget to promote the effort.

Created by Slingshot, the "Give A Toast" application uses contact lists from Facebook to automatically post "wall" messages to celebrate the birthday of Jack Daniel's creator Jasper Newton -- born sometime during September 1850.
